Our Rail Infrastructure

Did you know, that there are 1.718 billion train journeys taken every year in the UK?! Those trips are taken on 10,072 miles of track that link the 2,563 different stations spread across the UK. That, by any standards, is quite some infrastructure, and unsurprisingly it demands a great deal of installation and maintenance.

Servicing, maintenance and repair work on this vast network of railway track is relentless and requires the right tools for the job. With the demand on the network so high and only growing, all such work has to be performed to stringent standards, within specific timeframes, as well as providing traceability for the operations and maintenance teams and their client’s.

Nuts and bolts are all over the rail network, they occur throughout the infrastructure, tracks, points, overhead power lines, signals, bridges, most of these are safety critical so they need to be tightened accurately and in a controlled manner. Increasingly just controlling the tightening of these nut and bolts is not sufficient instead operations and maintenance teams are required to record the date and time details for each torque tightening they perform.

A whole variety of Norbar’s products are in use across the nation’s rail network. From the EvoTorque®2, an electronic torque multiplier, which has very recently been approved by the owner and infrastructure manager of most of the UK’s rail network, to the torque screwdriver used to accurately torque electrical connections in signal boxes. In those instances where standard products do not satisfy the requirements Norbar offer a Special Products service. In one such example a train operator was struggling to tighten the bolts pocketed deep into a casting. Norbar’s solution was a special offset gearbox based off their robust and proven PneuTorque range.
